DTH standard penetrometer (SPT)
The Standard Penetration Test or SPT was developed out of the need to recover soil samples during site investigation. Generally a sampler tool is driven into the bottom of a borehole whereas falling weight is 63,5 kgs and the falling height 762 mm. Standard tools are working from the surface and are connected to the sampler by rods - unfortunately affecting the stroke energy. The Nordmeyer SPT device is working directly on the bottom of the borehole and is wire line operated thus saving enormous time as no rods are being used and without any affection on the stroke energy. The probe attached to the lower end of the device can either be the well know split barrel or a solid cone. For the penetration test the first 15,2 cm of penetration depth are not considered since this distance might have been disturbed by drilling. The next 30,5 cm are decisive for evaluation. To achieve this number of blows are counted and noted down in a system of coordinates. The main dimensions of the Standard Penetrometer correspond to the standards of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) resp. German DIN and British Standard BS 1377.
